In music class, we began learning about the string family of instruments. Here is a wonderful video of a performance of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Check back soon for more videos! As some of you already know, I bought myself a mandolin over the Christmas break. Although many of you have heard me play in class, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite songs that feature the mandolin by a band called Nickel Creek (the mandolin player is Chris Thile; look him up). Enjoy! The cuica is a Brazilian instrument that can be considered a "friction drum."
As many of you already know, I have played the trumpet for the past 25 years. Recently, someone shared with me this video of the Baylor University trumpet ensemble, and I thought some of you might enjoy :-) Lots of folks are curious as to what kinds of things we do in music class here at Herrington. As the year goes on, I will post lots of videos and pictures here of your children in action. One of the things that we do quite a bit is make music on our Orff instruments. Below, you will find an example of one of the many things that your child might do this year (of course, the difficulty will depend on grade level). Enjoy! Today, one of my first-graders brought in her Harmonica to play for the class. Many children (including my own daughter!) start playing around with the harmonica at an early age, but don't realize that it can be learned as a serious instrument, just like violin, piano, or flute. Here is a video of a world-champion harmonica player in action: The other day, a student in class mentioned that he had a mandolin at home. The rest of the class was very curious about what a mandolin is, what it looks like, and how it is played. Well, here you go! |
